Future Motion Summer

I met Future Motion through Tyler James.

I had just gotten out of acupuncture in Downtown Santa Cruz and was sufficiently zenned out when a guy I'd never met walked up to me and asked if I'd ever ridden a Onewheel. I said no. He asked if I wanted to. I told him I wouldn't be any good at it. Somehow, a few minutes later, I was standing on one anyway. I think I made it about ten feet. Mostly, I remember apologizing to Tyler for death-gripping his hands the entire way.

It turned out Tyler was a really talented surfer, and we became fast friends. I started filming his waves whenever the swell was up to his standards, squeezing in early mornings before work and afternoons after. It wasn't long before he started introducing me to the rest of the Onewheel crew. First Kevin, then Bodhi, Chabre, and everyone else. Before I realized it was happening, I'd been folded into their world, and I wanted to see all of it.

By July, I was invited to the Future Motion office, where Jack gave me the full history of Onewheel and made sure I knew how to ride one. Circling the parking lot, I told him, "It feels like the Onewheel wants you to win." I didn't know how else to explain how intuitive it felt, like the board was working with me.

Soon, I was spending weekends with the crew by the river, at the beach, or at demo days teaching strangers how to ride Onewheels and the Antic.
